Community Development at Lake Mutanda

Mgahinga Community Development Organization (MCDO), the NGO that manages Lake Mutanda Eco Community Centre is currently investing in the development of the Lake Mutanda community. A percentage of the revenue generated from MECC is invested into 5 priority areas of community development. These are: education, health, livelihoods and conservation of Lake Mutanda wetland preservation.
MCDO trains women handicraft groups as way for the local communities to benefit from the growing tourism at Lake Mutanda. The handicraft groups make different products such as baskets, belts, oils, bags, mats among others which are made from local available materials like papyrus and banana fibers among other plants. The communities are also being empowered on the best practices for harvesting papyrus at Lake Mutanda in order to conserve the diminishing wetlands.
As more funding opportunities arise, MCDO in partnership with MECC, will continue to invest in livelihoods, health and education initiatives.
